“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Hebrews 12:1
As Christians, “doing life,” will often times produce difficult challenges. There will be times when the heat will be turned up so high, we will be tempted to quit. The obstacles will appear enormous and the mere thought of even making it, will disperse. One such story illustrates this meaning in the most incredible way. To this day, it is still being talked about.
Florence May Chadwick, age 24, attempted to swim twenty-three miles across the Catalina Channel. After swimming 15 hours and 55 minutes in an ice cold ocean surrounded by dense fog, she began to doubt her ability to make it. With her mom in the boat, encouraging her to continue, she persisted in her swim. Then, with only a half mile to go, she gave up.
Two months later, this same young lady decided to try again. And even though she’d faced the same dense fog as she had before, she kept a mental image of the shoreline in her mind-set and made it. The difference maker the second time around was her focus.
Florence May Chadwick could not change the circumstances that surrounded her on that day; however, she did change the way she looked at them. The end result, she reached her destination.
At a News Conference, after Florence’s first attempt to swim the Catalina Channel, she was recorded saying, “All I could see was the fog. I think if I could have seen the shore, I would have made it.” Does this resonate with you?
Our race that is set before us will never be in vain. Nor is our faith, hope and belief. Is there a dream you have? Is there a vision God has given you for future ministry? If so, whatever fog is in your way, keep pressing on, and know with certainty, your shoreline awaits.
Prayer: Lord help me to see past the fog in my life to the shoreline You have waiting. Give me endurance, strength and the grace to continue on.
